Shopping and Dining
In addition to being close to all of the shopping and dining options available in Baton Rouge, Prairieville is in the midst of developing about 20 acres for its own Commerce Centre, so residents don't have to leave town to find a variety of shops and restaurants.
Ascension Parish provides a number of large national retail outlets, such as a Walmart Supercenter, Tanger Outlet Center, Kmart and the Mall of Louisiana.
There is an extensive assortment of restaurants in and around Prairieville. Most of your favorite fast food stops are here, but you will also find original eateries as you drive around town. Some of these are Charlie Brown's Family Sports, Hoagie 'n' Deaux, On the Half Shell, the Smoothie King and Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers.
Parks and Recreation
Residents of Ascension Parish can proudly boast that they have 15 neighborhood parks and a vast selection of recreational programs, courses and other opportunities from which to choose.
There are baseball leagues and basketball associations for kids and young adults. Additionally, the Ascension Parish Recreation Center has developed a unique program called APIL or Ascension Parish Inclusive League. The idea behind the league is to give Ascension Parish kids ages four to thirteen, with or without developmental disabilities, the opportunity to play in a non-competitive recreational environment. Some of the activities are bowling, street hockey, baseball, and arts and crafts.
It's difficult to get a completely accurate population count of Prairieville because of its unincorporated status; however, most estimates give it as about 30,000. Ascension Parish, as a whole, encompasses about 303 square miles and is home to more than 107,000 people.
Located about 17 miles southeast of Baton Rouge, Prairieville is close enough to allow its residents to enjoy much of the nightlife, conveniences and choices available in a large metropolitan area. But it's far enough away to have its own identity and very few of the hassles inherent to urban life, like high crime rates, bumper-to-bumper traffic and high stress.
Schools, Health, Transportation
The school district that serves Prairieville is the Ascension Parish School Board. Within this school district there are a wide variety of public and private elementary, middle and high schools.
The vast majority of Prairieville commuters drive themselves to work and other spots around town. Public transportation is a bit hard to come by in Prairieville; however, since it's considered part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area, it's very close to bus and Amtrak services.
