Just the other day, Pat asked me why I love my neighborhood so much.
Why do I love thee? Let me count the ways!
University Gardens is very close to the LSU campus which means it's very close to the University Lakes.
I love to walk my little dog around the lakes. And I always see lots of other people walking their dogs or with their babies in strollers, they are usually friendly and like to chat. And I see people out running, riding their bikes, and canoeing and paddle-boarding on the lakes. It's a beautiful part of Baton Rouge for outdoor activities. It's also a great place to view wildlife such as egrets, ducks, and even foxes.
Another great aspect of the neighborhood is that the houses vary in architectural style and in size. There are beautiful, mature live oaks trees and other trees, and really classic, attractive landscaping with azaleas, camelias, and the like. There is always something in bloom.
If cooking is your thing, you'll find there are several grocery stores in the area, including the locally owned Bet-R, Trader Joe's, Albertson's, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Winn-Dixie, and Oriental Foods. We are also very close to downtown Baton Rouge. On Saturday mornings I drive ten minutes to the Red Stick Farmer's market to get the freshest produce and meat and seafood.
Or if you prefer to eat out there are a huge variety of restaurants to choose from in the area, everything from fresh local seafood to Italian to Thai cooking. If live music is your thing, we have small bars and a coffee shop that regularly features live music.
University Gardens is a lovely neighborhood that was started in the 1930s and is adjacent to Southdowns neighborhood. We have two fun parades that run each year, the Southdowns Mardi Gras Parade on the Friday evening before Mardi Gras, and the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Come and see why this is indeed the best neighborhood in town!
